Healthcare & Rehabilitation
Program Overview
As a volunteer at Mrumate Disabled Centre, you will gain valuable hands-on experience supporting children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. This program is ideal for anyone interested in healthcare, physiotherapy, special needs support, community service, or early childhood development. Volunteers work closely with local caregivers, learning how rehabilitation and disability care is provided in Tanzania.
Background
Tanzania faces a shortage of rehabilitation professionals, limited resources, and minimal access to specialized care for people with disabilities. Many families depend on community centers like Mrumate for support, therapy, and education. Volunteers play an important role by assisting caregivers, helping with daily routines, supporting therapy activities, and giving children individual attention that is often difficult to provide due to understaffing.
Volunteer Roles & Departments
At Mrumate, volunteers may assist in a variety of areas, depending on skills and interest. Common tasks include:
Helping with physical exercises, stretching, and mobility support
Assisting physiotherapists during rehabilitation sessions
Supporting children with feeding, hygiene, and daily routines
Teaching basic skills, playing educational games, and engaging in activities
Assisting with classroom tasks for children with learning difficulties
Providing emotional support and encouragement
Helping caregivers with daily operations
Learning Experience
Volunteers gain exposure to disability care in Tanzania, learn about common conditions such as cerebral palsy, developmental delay, and physical impairments, and develop skills in caregiving, patience, and communication. While the environment may be emotionally challenging due to limited equipment and resources, volunteers who embrace the experience find it deeply rewarding and impactful.
